Permanent Reopening of Tomb Postponed

Visitors Can Still Pray at the Closed Tomb in Assisi, Italy

The permanent reopening of the tomb of Blessed Carlo Acutis in Assisi, Italy, has been postponed. Visitors can still pray at the closed tomb, which is located in the Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi. The postponement was announced by the Shrine of the Renunciation Foundation, which is responsible for the care of Acutis' tomb.

Background on Carlo Acutis

Carlo Acutis was a Catholic Italian teenager who died of leukemia in 2006 at the age of 15. He was known for his piety and his devotion to the Eucharist. He was beatified by Pope Francis in 2020.

Acutis' tomb was originally opened to the public in 2019, but it was closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The shrine was scheduled to reopen permanently on July 15, 2021, but the reopening has been postponed due to ongoing concerns about the pandemic.

The Shrine of the Renunciation Foundation said in a statement that the decision to postpone the reopening was made "out of an abundance of caution" and that it is "committed to the safety of all pilgrims and visitors." The shrine said it will continue to monitor the situation and will announce a new reopening date when it is safe to do so.
